Plain text email
An email with no HTML formatting — just text, no images, no styled buttons.
Plain text email is email with no HTML formatting — just text, no embedded images, no styled buttons, no layout. The opposite of HTML email. Most production email programs send a multipart message that includes both an HTML version (rendered by default in modern clients) and a plain-text fallback (used by clients that don't render HTML).
Plain text has a specific niche: it's the format for cold outreach, founder-to-founder communication, sales follow-ups, and any email that should look like it came from a person rather than a marketing department. Plain-text emails often outperform HTML on engagement for low-volume, high-relevance sends — they look personal, they bypass the "this is marketing" pattern recognition, and they sometimes get better placement in Gmail's Primary tab.
Plain-text email has authentication caveats. Some authentication tools and email-development workflows are HTML-first and may quietly misconfigure plain-text sends. Test the rendering and the authentication on plain-text sends before going live.
